TRI Board

The Board of Directors comprises the Chairman and Chief Executive, one Non-Executive Director and four Executive Directors.

Their biographies below demonstrate collectively a broad range of business, financial and other relevant experience.

Mark Burrows Smith CEO

  • Appointed CEO in March 2020 by Waterland PE
  • Previously CEO at Greenstar (Cerberus appointee), REPIC (WEEE Recycling) and Bioverda Power (Green Energy)
  • Former COO at Viridor between 2011 – 2015
  • Experience in FTSE corporates and institutional investment with Cerberus, Waterland and Blackstone

Neil Wilson CFO

  • Joined TRI as CFO in October 2017
  • Previously Finance Director of RTX, NAAFI and Group Financial Controller at Yodel
  • Experience in logistics, retail and property
  • Qualified with KMPG

Jim Stewart CCO

  • Appointed to the TRI Board in September 2018
  • 25 years as Sales Director at Nathan’s Wastesavers
  • Extensive commercial experience in Europe, Africa, the Middle East and Pakistan

Ryan Hallworth Non-Executive

  • In 2017, Ryan co-founded Waterland’s UK office, in Wilmslow, Manchester.
  • Ryan sits on the board of Waterland UK and is currently leading the UK team. Prior to joining Waterland, Ryan worked at EY, where he was a founding member of the Debt Advisory Team; Deloitte, managing mid-market M&A, and buyouts; and DC Advisory, a mid-market M&A advisory firm.
  • Ryan has been instrumental to the success of Waterland’s diverse range of UK-based investments and remains a Non-Executive Director on the boards of several of these companies, including Textile Recycling International.

Michael Gallagher Executive Director

  • Founder of Ireland’s CTR business
  • Expanded and developed textile recycling in Ireland through the ’90’s and 2000’s
  • Acquired and integrated principle competitors into CTR business
  • Developed schools and sports club recycling projects throughout Ireland

Brendan O’Brien Executive Director

  • Developed and grew the family company NWS from the late ’80’s through to 2018
  • Acquired and integrated 3 competitors into the Nathan’s business
  • Introduced textile banks into the UK’s recycling landscape and developed sales markets in Africa and Eastern Europe

Trevor Elliot Board Secretary & Financial Controller

  • Promoted to Group Financial Controller and Board Secretary in 2020, Trevor started at Nathan’s Wastesavers in November 1999 as Financial Director
  • Joined Coopers & Lybrand (now PWC) Channel Islands in 1993, promoted to Audit Manager and later transferred to PWC Bermuda
  • Qualified as a Chartered Accountant with ICAS in 1993
